Our teacher assigned to us an academic essay writing task as part of our course on the humanities that we would have to submit before the end of next week. Our essay subject is about current issues and concerns in education so that for my student essay, I decided to focus my topic on providing special education for special needs students in public schools, including disabled students. Before I did my topic research, I only knew that special education is the form of education that addresses the individual differences and needs of students with medical, mental, or psychological disabilities.
Since I only had a week to research, write and complete my student essay about current issues or concerns on special education for public school students, I did a thorough research in the library and from various Internet websites, and I read and collected the materials that are relevant for my topic. I wanted to produce an academic essay on special education that is well-written because the essay is a major contributor for the final grade I would receive for the course on humanities. When I finished collecting all the materials I needed, I read them again and decided that my topic would have a focus or main theme.
The focus of my student essay topic on concerns or issues in special education is the continue issue on the practice of inclusion in which students with special needs would be occasionally or regularly placed in regular, mainstream classes or in classrooms that have normal, non-disabled students. I learned that the main purpose of including disabled students in regular classrooms are for enabling them to socialise with regular students so that they do not think that they are isolated and alienated.
However, the main issue of the inclusion practice is that it is often criticised by special education advocated and by some parents of children with special needs. The critics say that some disabled students need instructional methods that could not be performed with the use of regular teaching methods. Another issue with inclusion is that the students with psychological disabilities could exhibit mannerisms or other behaviours that could be disruptive to the regular students in the mainstream class.
